I am honestly surprised no one mentioned the aesthetics of gold when referring to its value. Humans just inherently like their shiny stuff.
But regarding teeth currencies, gold teeth were a type of currency on their own. Sailors notably considered it an easy way to keep their money with them. Also, amongst those who trade in the death industry throughout history, such as hangmen, there is often the grim task of checking the corpse for valuables as payment which included gold teeth.
